The JRE matches the bits of my browser. That is not the problem. My browser just does not run my applet. I try to see the error and it still tells me I am using Java 7 even though I have Java 8 installed and defaulted.

The "top-level ancestor" referred to here is the window (or applet, if you're running in an applet). So the javadocs are really (aiui) saying that the window in which the node is becomes the active window....

Web-applications in the same JVM are loaded by different class loaders, so they can't see each other's classes. So an exception thrown by one produces a ClassNotFoundException in the other if the exception class isn't in both applications.

that has nothing to do with character sets and everything to do with windows newline conventions. the newline convention on windows is "\r\n", and notepad _only_ understands this format.

You can use RoboVM to build and deploy real iOS apps to the AppStore - it's possible! But without JavaFX support it's no really interesting (for me).
